Acadmic Programs

In pursuit of our mission, Oxford University School provides students a challenging curriculum is a nurturing, creative environement.  The core curriculum includes mathematic, science, social studies, and an integrated language arts program.  Instruction in special subjects for all students includes computer, art, music, Spanish, and physical education.  Independent research projects are required of OUS students beginning in the second grade.

Small classes provide abundant opportunities for individual attention and variable pacing.  The curriculum is designed to prepare students for the challenges and realities of the future.  A central part of that preparation, reflected in the OUS curriculum, is the passing on of what is best and most enduring among the values, traditions, culture, and knowledge of the past.

Honors won in competition can by no means be offered as a complete measure of academic achievement. Nevertheless, OUS is quite proud of the impressive records compiled by its students in a variety of academic competitions. OUS students have consistently distinguished themselves in Science Fairs, Spelling and Geography Bees at local, state, and regional levels, Math Counts, Math Olympics and in the Academic Betterment Competition.

 Curriculum

OUS offers a curriculum that challenges students to view learning as stimulating and rewarding while preparing them to realize and enjoy their full potential as individuals. Our curriculum is based on national standards organized more specifically by the state of Mississippi.  These standards serve as a guideline, and we strive on a continual basis to teach above and beyond the given objectives.  Our ultimate goal is to produce life-long learners who recognize the worth and delight of self, others, and learning.

Early Childhood programs encourage the development of the total child with emphasis on socialization skills. Math manipulatives, reading readiness programs, science and social studies are an important part of the Pre-Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten curriculum.

Core subjects in the Lower School include language arts, math, social studies, and science. These core classes are enhanced with classes in visual and performing arts, computers, foreign languages, physical education, independent studies and academically oriented field trips.

OUS students often participate in community service projects. Over the years students learn to value the importance of giving back to the larger community around them.
