First Grade

First Grade News from Carolyn and Sandy

We had a great time making gingerbread houses last week. Thanks to all of you who were able to come and help with this activity. You created a special memory for the children that will last a lifetime. If you haven’t sent your ten dollars to pay for the gingerbread kit, please send it as soon as possible so we can repay Meridith Friday.

Our Grandparent’s program was great! The children were precious and we enjoyed having so many special guests. Thanks to the parents that organized the brunch, prepared food, and bought extra supplies for the gingerbread houses. Everything was so nice and we are so grateful for your support! A special thanks goes to Pauline and Mike Lewis for making everyone copies of the first grade cookbook. We are very grateful for their generosity. This will be a wonderful keepsake for all of us.

We will begin using a new online reading program after Christmas. The PSG purchased it for the first grade to use this year. It will enrich our reading program that we are currently using in the classroom by allowing your child to access books on his/her reading level online. Each book is accompanied by a test to check for comprehension. This will be a wonderful resource for our students. Thanks to our PSG for being so supportive and providing the materials that we need!

We will have pajama day on Thursday, December 18th to go along with our “Polar Express” unit. The children may wear their pajamas to school and bring their uniforms to put on before we go out to recess. We will have our own version of Santa’s workshop in our classrooms with lots of fun activities planned for the children. We could use some help with the stations in the workshop. If you would like to volunteer to come and help on Thursday morning, please let us know and we will send you some more information. We will try to begin at 8:30 that morning.

On Friday, we will be learning about how other countries celebrate Christmas. The children will have their passports stamped as they travel through England, Germany, Holland, Italy, France, and Mexico. The first through the fifth grade teachers will share the traditions and customs of their chosen country. We know that some parents will be setting up for our Christmas party, but we could really use a few volunteers to help us rotate the children through the other classrooms. We will begin these activities as soon as assembly is over.

If you can help with the activities on Thursday or Friday, please email Carolyn at cspray4@yahoo.com to volunteer. We would really appreciate your help!

Our Christmas party will begin at 10:30 on Friday morning. We hope you’ll be able to join us for this special event.

Your children are such a blessing to us and we are so glad to have them in our classes. Please feel free to email or call us if you ever have any questions or concerns about anything.
