Fourth GradeLANGUAGE ARTS Language Arts is composed of five learning strands: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. READING Reading is integrated in all subject areas in our curriculum. The student will increase oral and silent reading fluency and accuracy by reading aloud and silently. They will paraphrase, summarize, and describe story elements such as the setting, characters, mood, motivation, problems/conflict, events/plot, solution, and conclusion. They will determine the author’s purpose as well as recognize the main idea of paragraphs or other written passages. Learn strategies that will help them with reading comprehension and to be able to respond to literary selections. Students will read a variety of novels as well as the Harcourt Reading Series, Pathways to Adventures, to enhance their learning experience. WRITING AND ENGLISH The student will write compositions of at least three paragraphs and accomplish this through planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and self reflecting on written communications. They will write in various forms such as friendly letters, book reports, journals, poems, etc. Compose a variety of oral, visual, and written presentations from information gathered. They will demonstrate knowledge of grammar and usage, including propositions, adverbs, conjunctions, articles, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and punctuation. SPEAKING/LISTENING/VIEWING The student will be required to speak in complete sentences using Standard English. He/she will contribute to class discussions and present short planned and rehearsed oral presentations. Work in groups and continue to develop strategies for listening and speaking that respect the rights and contributions of others. The student will be required to integrate speaking, listening, writing, and reading to study and solve problems. MATH Fourth grade math is composed of five learning strands: patterns/algebraic thinking, data analysis/prediction, measurement, geometric concepts, and number sense. These learning strands are integrated as math objectives are taught. Fourth graders master the four basic operations and master decimals, fractions, and double-digit division. SCIENCE The fourth grade student will study life science, earth and space science, and physical science. Students continue to further their knowledge of the scientific process, also. Science will be integrated with other subjects and the student will complete research activities to enhance their learning. SOCIAL STUDIES The fourth grade Social Studies curriculum is composed of four learning strands: civics, history, geography, and economics. Fourth graders learn about Mississippi history and will gain an appreciation for the many cultural elements that have helped shape the state of Mississippi. Students will use their research skills as part of their study. |
