Second GradeLanguage Arts We approach literacy instruction by using superiority literature as the basis for instruction in phonics, writing, grammar, and spelling. Phonics teaching is also delivered using a methodical program. Students listen to teachers read aloud, they read independently in small groups, and work in small instructional groups. Children are taught decoding and comprehension strategies through direct instruction. Writing is an essential part of our program. Students learn to write in all curriculum areas: writing in daily journals, answering literature-based questions, recording scientific data, and documenting historical information in social studies. Moreover, teaching writing as a process allows students to break down writing into easily manageable stages (Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing). In the course of the year, the students publish a book containing their original stories. This allows the students and parents to measure their progress as developing young authors. In addition, as the students become more fluent readers and writers, they find out that reading and writing gives them Power; power to take control of their learning. Math The goal of our math program is to instill confidence in students as they become problem-solvers who value and enjoy math. Math is composed of six strands which are: Problem solving, reasoning, and processes; Number, operation, quantitative reasoning, and algebra; Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; Geometry and spatial reasoning; Measurement and time; Statistics, graphing, and probability. Problem-solving is the focus of math instruction and is developed through teaching of strategies and practice and choosing and applying those strategies to solve relevant, engaging, and meaningful problems. Social Studies The social studies program focuses on preparing students to be responsible citizens in society by teaching them to understand and appreciate the diversity and commonality of people. Topics explored include: maps and globes, civics and government, buyers and sellers, calendars, timelines, and folktales from around the world. The students complete varies research projects on famous historical people in history. Also, students investigate geography in their Daily Geography Practice, which helps students become more aware of the world around them.
