Things That Make OUS A Special Place To Be

 DID YOU KNOW -

69% of OUS Faculty and Administration hold either a Master's degree or higher.  WOW!

The first graders at OUS have a class bear named Paddington. He travels all around the United States to help them learn about our country. Each child is asked to submit an address at the beginning of the year where Paddington can go on his adventure. After taking Paddington to the post office, the children wait with great anticipation to hear about the places that he visits. We receive letters, pictures, and small treats from each state to help us learn about our country. Paddington's latest adventure has taken him to The White House. We received pictures of him posing with the portrait of George Washington that was saved before the White House was burned, a picture of him with Abraham Lincoln in the State Dining Room, a picture with Benjamin Franklin in the Green Room, and much more. We even have pictures of him posing next to a picture of Queen Elizabeth and the Obamas. This has been a great geography and history lesson for our students. Thanks to Jack Green and his family for sending Paddington to their friend at The White House. A special thanks goes to Mr. Everett in Washington, D.C. for going to so much trouble to make this a wonderful learning experience for our children at OUS.

At OUS, students have the opportunity to enhance what they have learned in the classroom by taking educational field trips.  Recently, our SK classes went to The Fiddlin Rooster Farms to enrich their science unit (and have a little fun).  They learned how butter is made, how corn is turned into flour, saw a petting zoo, picked pumpkins, and so many other fun memory makers.  Fifth and Sixth Grade students get the opportunity to take a field trip to Camp Hopewell for some special bonding time. What an amazing and FUN field trip for this special group. They get to have a little fun by climbing a 75 foot wall, doing a 50 foot catwalk, doing a zipline, a group concentration grid, and lots of other team building activities. Must be fun to learn in Fifth and Sixth Grade at OUS!

Our schools is committed to reaching out in various ways to help our community.  For example, JK CLASSES recently collected pennies for the Nine Lives Rescue organization. We are so proud of our students for showing kindness toward animals and learning how to have a positive impact on our community.

OUS is going high tech and has installed the first SMARTBOARD on campus. It is fantastic!  The kids will really enjoy using it as part of our technology classes. The interactivity that this enhancement provides allows teachers to let their students collaborate, draw, and interact with information on the screen. Lessons and activities in a classroom setting become more engrossing for students and increase overall retention of the lesson content. Research done by the Smart company as well as by the British Economic and Social Research Council shows clearly that teachers that use this type of equipment see greater improvement from their students compared to classrooms that do not use SmartBoard enriched classroom content.
